May 11, 2004: O'Toole on Press Junket for Troy

O'Toole reveals interesting details in FOX News Interview:
- he is working on the third volume of his memoirs, "Loitering with Intent" - but as to when it will be completed, he demurred.
- he was in New York City on September 11, 2001, staying in his usual hotel, the Chelsea.  He's moved up town because "...the whole thing made me so sad I can't go back there."

April 23, 2004: Quick note: The Discussion Forum is open and functioning although recent requests for access were being filtered as spam by my email program. That's fixed now and I've validated all those who submitted requests for access in the past few months(!) whose emails I didn't receive. The revelation is due in part to a rude letter I received from a user who thinks this place sucks if I can't return his email within a week - well, if I'd seen it I would have responded quicker– we're all going to have to get used to the way spam filters work, people.

...On a much more positive note, the UK's Total Film magazine has named Lawrence of Arabia as 'the greatest movie epic of all time'. This in anticipation of O'Toole's upcoming release of Troy - a convenient association, I think but not undeserved. Hard to think of a film that can match LOA for across-the-board epic-ness, no? See articles here: scotsman.com, bbcnews,

Man of La Mancha has been re-released on DVD - due out May 11th. (amazon.com)

Red Light Runners - starring O'Toole and Harvey Keitel, among others, is off the tracks for the moment due to 'funding problems' according to this article in the UK Guardian newspaper (third paragraph from the bottom) - but it does say "it should be back on track soon."

Bright Young Things, Stephen Fry's production starring O'Toole, was featured this week at the Washington D.C. film festival. A listing for the film at the festival is here. It mentions "Peter O’Toole owns his one scene as Nina’s daft father." BYT is also featured at the World Cinema Naples festival, an offshoot of the Marco Island Film Festival, which started this week.

Some terrific Warner Bros. production stills of O'Toole as King Priam in Troy are available at comingsoon.net. I'm going to set up a Troy section in the photographical area soon but for the time being, here's a good one --->... (others: one, two, three)

Latinoreview.com has the pictures as well as some promotional banners. There's a terrific article from Elle magazine at orlandomultimedia.net. Mentions O'Toole a number of times favourably.

Sian Phillips turns 70 next month.

Here's a funny caricature of O'Toole (looks to be sourced on his late 70's look) at cartoons by pinch.

April 20, 2004: New Trailer for Troy added to Warner Bros. Website!
... with lots of O'Toole. go check it out!

I'm not going to get myself in trouble with the Getty Images people by posting their images of O'Toole on this website. However, I _can_ point you to the results of an image search through their website resulting in the following directory of 95 (so far) images of O'Toole dating back to the beginnings of his career. Aside from the Getty watermark the images are quite good -- especially the early ones.

April 1st, 2004: Hello! -- so's you know, the Unofficial Peter O'Toole
pages was six years old as of March 24th!
>110,000 hits and counting!

Just a little housecleaning of a couple of links I've been accumulating:

Kate O'Toole performs in Neil LaBute's controversial play
- "The Mercy Seat" - about a couple caught up in the events of 9/11.

"O'Toole sends sympathy from camel experience"
- in the Mar 12, 2004 telegraph.co.uk sports section.

Recently, Stephen Fry's Bright Young Things, based on Evelyn Waugh's Vile Bodies, was the closing-night film at the Cleveland International Film Festival (ending March 28th). Peter stars in the film along with Stockard Channing and Dan Akroyd.

January 7, 2004: Happy New Year, folks...
We are still here and functioning... I must apologise to the people
who have signed the guestbook and not had their posts made
visible over the past few months - the email notification I
usually get about new guestbook entries seems to get pulled
by my spam filter - so I've fixed that. More updates soon.|

In the meantime, the most exciting stuff lately is that the website for
Troy is up here,
and there's a really nice teaser trailer available.
Go check it out! Troy hits US theatres on May 21 [imdb].
Here's the promo pic they're using for O'Toole's role as King Priam (right):

The imdb lists "Red Light Runners" as another O'Toole film in production for 2004 - no word on what role O'Toole is playing - but the spy-themed movie stars Michael Madsen, Harvey Keitel and Roy Scheider - all known to be rough-and-tumble types... could be exciting!

September 15, 2003: O'Toole to star with Omar Sharif in "Gilgamesh".
According to this story in the Utusan Malaysia Online entertainment section, O'Toole is to star in a new, big budget film with Omar Sharif. Filming begins in February, in Morocco. "Gilgamesh", about the first king of Mesopotamia, 5,000 years ago.

The Final Curtain, reviewed at Ireland Online (three stars!)

Bright Young Things, Stephen Fry's directoral debut, has been well reviewed at the Toronto Film Festival - "Bright Young Things: Actor Stephen Fry makes a bonny directing debut with this frisky story of reckless youth, based on Evelyn Waugh's novel Vile Bodies. Emily Mortimer, Stephen Campbell Moore, Fenella Woolgar and Michael Sheen earnestly embody London party people in the last gasp of hedonism before the Second World War. Fry's high-octane tale is augmented by support from Dan Aykroyd, Stockard Channing, Jim Broadbent and a wonderfully batty cameo by Peter O'Toole. "

September 2, 2003: Update on "My Scorpion Soul":
Apparently there have been some changes to the cast of MSS - of course O'Toole is still on the bill, but Gillian Anderson and Rupert Everett are no longer co-starring due to conflicts with other commitments... as well, the film begins shooting in April, 2004 - it had been slated for release in February in the UK. It will still be a co-production between Filmworks Int'l of the UK and Kanzaman of Spain. The film's page has been removed from the IMDB as well! Ahh... The world of film-making.
August 6, 2003: Update
Peter O'Toole nominated for an Emmy! - "Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie" for his role as Hindenburg in Hitler: The Rise of Evil (CBS) Miniseries. He won a few years back for playing Bishop Cauchon in Joan of Arc - can he do it again? Be watching on September 21st. O'Toole is up against the following:

Ben Gazzara as Nick in Hysterical Blindness (HBO)
Chris Cooper as Thomas Riversmith in My House in Umbria (HBO)
John Malkovich as Talleyrand in Napoleon (A&E)
Alan Arkin as Harry Rowen in The Pentagon Papers (Paramount)
.

...now I don't know about you but I'd say the field is weak. But I haven't seen the other performances and they're all fine actors – and O'Toole's role was pretty small. But cross your fingers and toes anyway.

August 2nd was
Peter O'Toole's 71st birthday!
Happy Birthday, Peter!

(note to all - I have been on vacation for the past few weeks - and am still, for all intents and purposes - so updates can't be as frequent. I am keeping my ear to the ground, though. Keep those emails and guestbook signings coming!)

June 19, 2003: Pictures of O'Toole in Malta!

David Mifsud writes, "Mr O'Toole is currently in Malta for the filming of Helen of Troy which includes actor Brad Pitt in the leading role. Yesterday he came to tour the Grandmasters' Palace in Valletta and I had the privilege of showing him around." Thank you to Mr. Mifsud for providing the pictures.

June 10, 2003: More O'Toole movies coming!

Sophie on the guestbook was nice enough to let me/us know that O'Toole is listed in the cast on two upcoming movies:

My Scorpion Soul
- directed by Marcus Reichert
- filming in London & Spain
- begins shooting, April 2004

"A tropical setting: a dying man, his life a disaster of decadence and mis-spent emotion. A writer surviving on his charm. Two women, one spoiled and clinging, the other unawakened but formidable. The collision of two hidden worlds."

Closing the Ring
- directed by Richard Attenborough
- filming is scheduled to begin in September.
- with Dennis Hopper, Shirley MacLaine, Ryan Phillipe and Mena Suvari.

June 4, 2003:
Did you watch the AFI Special?
... or the Hitler Miniseries?

O'Toole's been a busy fellow this year - more to come with Bright Young Things and Troy.

AFI voted O'Toole's portrayal of T.E. Lawrence in David Lean's Lawrence of Arabia as the 10th greatest film hero of the past 100 years of film. Congratulations on making the top ten, Peter!

The Unofficial Peter O'Toole Pages passed its 90,000th hit this week! Not bad, not bad. All the attention surrounding O'Toole's Honourary Oscar has helped just a bit, of course... Since that story broke we've had 20,000 hits alone! It's a good time to be an O'Toole fan.

April 17, 2003:
O'Toole interviewed for AFI Special:
- link to original story: here. (zap2it.com)

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - Arnold Schwarzenegger, no stranger to playing larger-than-life characters on both sides of the law, will host AFI's latest special, "100 Years ... 100 Heroes & Villains." Airing on Tuesday, June 3, the special will unveil a list of 50 great heroes and 50 great villains voted on by a jury of film artists (directors, screenwriters, actors, editors, cinematographers, etc.), critics and historians.

Baron's daughter Biky Homberg du Boulnois became 'close friends' with O'Toole (midway down the page) "She became close friends with Peter O'Toole, who "drank like a fish ... and he was clumsy because he had huge feet," she said, and Omar Sharif. The veteran actor of the group, Anthony Quinn, she recalled, was "so arrogant." According to du Boulnois, when Quinn was required to share a scene with O'Toole, he would make mounds in the sand on which to stand so he'd appear taller, and he would manipulate his position so he was facing the camera while O'Toole's back was to it."

March 30, 2003: More than 30 pictures added!
I've added a sixth page of O'Toole pics to the photographical section - 33 pics in all!

March 25, 2003:

As of March 24th (yesterday) the Unofficial Peter O'Toole pages is five years old!

...what a long strange trip it's been. The perfect birthday present was delivered on Sunday, of course, with O'Toole's Oscar. In the past three days we've had over 3500 hits to the site, by far the biggest day was Sunday with over 2700 hits! A normal day is around 40 hits or so - the Oscar ride was worth it! Well, enjoy the site everyone!

March 23, 2003: CONGRATULATIONS PETER O'TOOLE!

"'Always a bridesmaid, never a bride' – my foot!"

"Meryl Streep, members of the Academy, distinguished guests, viewers, ladies and gentlemen. 'Always a bridesmaid, never a bride' – my foot! I have a my very own Oscar, to be with me 'til death do us part. I wish the Academy to know I am as delighted as I am honoured. And I am honoured. The magic of the movies enraptured me when I was a child. As I totter into antiquity, movie magic enraptures me still. Having already bagged this baby, as it were, and so spared uncertainties prior to the opening of an envelope, I am able to think. I think of our colleagues, our old friends, now gone, who played their parts in this ceremony. I think of the sumptuous talents alive and well and with us now. I think of the astonishing young, the gifted and able young men and women who I meet practically every time I go to work – and from whom I grab energy in handfuls. I think of the United States and of the loves and friendships I've known here for more than half a century. And of how much the nation has given to me both personally, privately and professionally – I am deeply thankful. And now, at this last, you have given me this delightful shock!
You are very good. Good night and God bless you."

Sir Michael Gambon, not Peter O'Toole [nor Ian McKellan or Christopher Lee], to replace Richard Harris as Dumbledore in third Harry Potter movie.

Ah well, it was a nice idea while it lasted. My favourite roles for Gambon so far have been as Lyndon B. Johnson in "Path to War" and as the Thief in Peter Greenaway's "The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover". Gambon will make a very good Dumbledore, I think. Apparently he went up for the part 'cuz his granddaughter loves the Potter books.

O'Toole Reconsiders:
Will Accept Oscar!!

According to a cbc.ca report, O'Toole has reconsidered and will attend the Academy Awards ceremony to accept his honorary Oscar! Sort of an early Valentine's Day present to us fans, and the Academy. One has to wonder what sort of pleading went on through the backchannels... Now, we wait to see what O'Toole will say as his acceptance speech!

Peter Refuses Oscar!!!

According to this Reuters report, O'Toole has sent a letter to AMPAS saying that he is 'enchanted' by the gesture [of being nominated] but that he is "still in the game and might win the lovely bugger outright, so could the Academy please defer the honour until I am 80?" AMPAS's president has written back a letter reminding O'Toole that the award is not a retirement but a recognition of his acheivements over his career thus far - previous honorees, like Paul Newman, went on to win Oscars after receiving an honorary one. MORE NEWS AS I GET IT, FOLKS! Obviously this is O'Toole's trademark eccentricity at work - he is Irish, after all. After seven noms and no Oscar he's entitled to make them twist a bit before accepting an honorary one.

January 25, 2003:

O'Toole to Receive Honorary Oscar!!

After seven nominations (Lawrence; Becket; Lion in Winter; Mr.Chips; Ruling Class; Stunt Man & My Favourite Year), O'Toole will finally be awarded an Oscar at this year's Academy Awards on March 23rd. The citation will read: "Peter O'Toole - whose remarkable talents have provided cinema history with some of its most memorable moments."

I think this may be a moment where O'Toole fans can pat themselves on the back - was it our campaign of emails and letters that brought them to this decision? Who can say. In any case, it's terrific and long overdue. Now I know I'll be watching the Oscars waiting to see Peter take the stage -- and not to present an award, but to be honoured by his peers for a lifetime of dedication to the craft. I'll be posting links to stories about this up to and after the awards - stay tuned!!!! in honour of this happy news I have added more than 40 images of O'Toole to the pictures of O'Toole section - page 5. January 8, 2003: news.google.com is a terrific way to search for new mentions of O'Toole in the media. Here are two recent stories:
O'Dumbledore - The Mirror, UK - RICHARD Harris' family have urged the makers of Harry Potter to pass the part of Professor Dumbledore to his drinking buddy Peter O'Toole...
Lawrence of Arabia still epic four decades earlier - West County Times - Peter O'Toole was absolutely terrific.". That greatness could have something to do with the dazzling, original effects created by humans -- not computers. ...

I've added 'news.google.com O'Toole to the toolbar above - click it and you'll go to a new window with the results of a search for Peter O'Toole via news.google.com.
December 19, 2002: Announcing a new addition to the Unofficial Peter O'Toole Pages!
I have added a discussion area! A freeform bulletin board where you can post messages, pictures, etc.. relating to O'Toole. Suggestions for the 'Pages can also be made here.

This is on a test-basis for the next while to see how well it works. It isn't the fastest in the business, mainly because it's operating on a small server and doesn't have a high priority for my service provider. If it becomes too burdonsome, I'll take it down. Remember, we still have the guestbook to fall back on. At the moment I will be approving all new members. Anyone who posts off-topic (i.e. non O'Toole related material) will be given a single warning and then their access will be revoked. Please be polite and treat eachother nicely!

To try it out, click on the phpbb2 image to the right. Clicking will open a new window.

November 28, 2002: O'Toole is mentioned, with a picture, on page 139 of the December 2002 issue of GQ - the picture is by Bob Willoughby, taken in 1962 when O'Toole was promoting Lawrence of Arabia. As always, O'Toole looks fabulous and the point of the article is to highlight the fact that O'Toole knew to wear a proper tuxedo to celebrate his Oscar nomination for L.O.A. - some time before Hollywood popularized that choice of costume.
November 21, 2002: Sian Philips publishes "Public Places," the second volume of her memoirs, centering on her 20 year relationship with Peter O'Toole. Details at backstage.com, here.

November 9, 2002: LOTS OF NEWS!
O'Toole starred in an Australian Rugby commerical! -in October, 2001.
See picture above, story here. PDF version here.
Vittorio Storaro, noted cinematographer, shot the spot, directed by Thomas Krygier.

O'Toole to cameo in an upcoming film, titled 'Bright Young Things" directed by comic actor Stephen Fry! See story here. The film, based on Evelyn Waugh's Vile Bodies, is filming now. More info here.

Saw "Rock My World" tonight on pay-per-view, finally! O'Toole was terrific! Others have already confirmed this opinion in the guestbook. Nice to see the Hamilton countryside being put to good use. Strange to see O'Toole popping an 'E'... But, definitely some of his most spirited work in recent times.

***** Special note: in an interesting follow up to the death of Richard Harris - O'Toole's name is now being bandied about in the press as a possible replacement for Harris in the role of Dumbledore in the third Harry Potter film. For more information, see the following article:
"Who'll run Hogwarts?" - The New York Daily News

October 26, 2002:
Sir Richard Harris
died yesterday, in hospital. He was 72. Many comparisons and connections are made between Harris and Peter O'Toole, and the other 'wild men of stage and screen', Richard Burton and Albert Finney. A quick Google of Harris and O'Toole brings up the following news stories:

A Man Called Harris
Hellraiser Harris dies aged 72
Richard Harris, Versatile and Volatile Star, Dies at 72
'Camelot' Star Richard Harris Dies
Richard Harris Battling Cancer
Renowned Actor Richard Harris Dies
Richard 'Dumbledore' Harris dies in hospital
'Hell-Raiser' Richard Harris Dies in Hospital

So now it's only Peter O'Toole left to carry on the torch of the firebrand actor from the British Isles. Good luck Peter! Long life!
Respect to the family and friends of Mr. Harris.
August 2, 2002:

June 28, 2002 (updated July 12):
Global Heresy (Rock My World) finally released (in Canada)!
Peter's new film, shot in and around Southern Ontario, has finally hit theatres - to positive reviews! Here are some links:
imdb.com
The Globe and Mail(Canada)

According to Jeff Swindoll, Rock my World (aka Global Heresy) is coming to DVD/Video on September 3rd, 2002 from Universal Home Video. More info and a graphic can be had at http://www.image-entertainment.com and doing a search for Rock my World. Peter gets top billing on the box, but a huge pic of Silverstone graces the cover. Apparently the film has had a 'rework' to suit the pop-teen-crazy U.S. market.

Also, courtesy of Ray Stanton, we have a couple of scanned newspaper articles featuring O'Toole that have appeared recently. A good quote of his from a while back (paraphrased): - when asked what he does for exercise, he replied that he "keeps fit by following the caskets of (his) friends". (anyone have the exact quote - and source?). He's been busy at funerals. One for Spike Milligan, and the other for Dame Dorothy Tutin. The Milligan pic is priceless.

May 5, 2002: Pictures Update!
At long last - I've added 52 pictures! - assorted through the O'Toole, Emporer, Ruling Class, Lord Jim, Million, Lion, Mr.Chips, Generals, Becket, Phantoms& Pussycat sections! Enjoy.

Oh, and Paul Morton was kind enough to email me a link to a PageSix article on O'Toole's appearance on "The Education of Max Bickford" (see below) - the link is here.

A note of interest from Brian, one of our users:
August 2 is the birthday of this brilliant actor who has the dubious distinction of receiving the most Oscar nominations for Best Actor (7) without ever winning the award. What better day could there be to contact the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) and ask them to remedy this oversight by presenting Mr. O'Toole with an honorary Oscar at the 2002 ceremony (exactly 40 years after he was "introduced" to the world in "Lawrence of Arabia")?

The following is the contact information provided on the AMPAS website:

Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences
Academy Foundation
8949 Wilshire Boulevard
Beverly Hills, CA 90211-1972
Phone: 310-247-3000
Fax: 310-859-9351 or 310-859-9619
E-mail: ampas@oscars.org

So send AMPAS an e-mail (containing something like the message given below), and pass the information along to all your friends so they can do the same. It's the least his fans can do to try to repay the pleasure that his performances have given them over the past 40 years.

Thanks.
Brian

SAMPLE LETTER
****************************
Dear Directors of the Academy,

In my opinion as a member of the moviegoing public, one of the people most deserving of an honorary Oscar is Peter O'Toole. The fact that this brilliant actor (nominated 7 times) has never received an Oscar is an oversight that should be corrected as soon as possible. The ceremony in 2002 would be a perfect time to give him this honor, since it will mark the fortieth anniversary of "Lawrence of Arabia" (the movie that "introduced" him to the world in the 1962). Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,
[NAME & ADDRESS]

Good News! Peter will be appearing on the CBS television show, "The Education of Max Bickford", starring Richard Dreyfuss, on Sunday, May 12th at 8pm EDT. Don't miss it! Our favourite actor makes these appearances rarely so this will be a real treat. Thank you to Mark Murphy, Jeff Swindoll, 'catsyawn', and Jack Tanner (on our guestbook!) for providing this information!

Oh, and a small note. My first child, Ethan Connor, was born Saturday, April 20th at 5:15pm, at Mt.Sinai Hospital in Toronto! 7 lbs. 9 oz., a perfectly healthy boy! Anyone who's bought the DVD release or who's rented is welcome to post a review in the guestbook! Good to see that O'Toole's movies are being treated properly, DVD-wise. It's only a matter of time before a decent re-release of What's New Pussycat? hits the shelves... :-)

January 26, 2002:

Wow! It's been a long, long time since I've updated the site. Apologies to you all. My life has been changing a lot in the past year or two, as some of you know - I got married, bought a house, and now my wife Christine and I have a baby on the way, due in April. It's going to be a boy! Some name we're looking at : Peter... (no, I'm kidding) but we are liking Irish or Celtic names. Eamonn, Declan, Iain, Connor... with either James or Riley as the middle name. We're going to wait to see the kid first before we settle the name issue. As you can imagine, playing house and starting a family take up a fair bit of one's mental time as well as physical - so I haven't had much time to update the site. My other website, hame.ca, hasn't been updated since September 13th... However I hope to get back into the swing very soon.

I have a fair number of newfound pics of O'Toole to add to the pictures page - I will do that within the week. Not much O'Toole news to import - there have been a couple of newspaper articles to which I will provide links, or I'll repost them here. As with the pictures, it'll be online by next Saturday, promise! Best to you all for the New Year, by the way. I'm still looking forward to seeing Global Heresy and The Final Curtain, neither of which I've been able to find so far. When will they be released?

August 2, 2001:

Today is Peter O'Toole's birthday!
Peter O'Toole was born August 2nd, 1932. Happy 69th, Peter! See the guestbook for good wishes from our users!
(note: I will be making an update soon, folks - I know it's been a while. Too long! I just moved into a new house! Lots of news to tell you soon.)

April 8, 2001: The recent deluxe DVD release of Lawrence of Arabia has created a stir of interest in O'Toole - he's doing interviews again. In this week's Entertainment Weekly (April 13/01 iss.) there is a full article with lots of pictures - not much new information, as usual, but it's always nice to see O'Toole in the spotlight again.
(see here for the ew-online version - here are scans of the article 1,2,3,4,5,6 and the table of contents pic)
As well, thank you to Mark Murphy for providing this L.A. Times article on the DVD release! Anyone who sees other articles and interviews on this or other O'Toole related news, please let me know and I'll make sure to put it online!
March 27, 2001:

On March 24th, the Unofficial Peter O'Toole Pages began its fourth year of operation!

Three years ago, I started this site because there wasn't a single comprehensive web page devoted solely to O'Toole's life and work - that had to change, so I figured I'd give it a shot. Over 30,000 hits later, the site is as good as ever and new material shows up all the time. It helps that the subject is still alive and working! (rumours of his death were greatly exaggerated...). Thanks again to everyone who's contributed to the site to make it what it is. I look forward to the coming year, with at least two O'Toole films coming (The Final Curtain and Global Heresy) there will be lots to talk about. Perhaps O'Toole will complete the third volume of his memoirs, Loitering with Intent? We can only hope! Over the next few weeks I will be revamping the menu system to improve the interface of the site, and I'll be making a few changes to the 'look and feel'... stay tuned!

February 24, 2001: As promised, a significant picture update - over 60 pics added to the following sections!: Miscellaneous, Ruling Class, My Favourite Year, The Generals, Pictures of O'Toole 4, Lion in Winter, How to Steal a Million, Lord Jim, Lawrence of Arabia, Goodbye Mr. Chips, Jeffrey Bernard is Unwell, and Becket. Enjoy!
February 23, 2001: Peter is mentioned in this month's issue of Toronto Life (March 2001) - pages 72-73, with a small picture and blurb on pg. 75. The article is on Gino Empry, a Toronto personality. Written by Sarah Hampton, the author of the feature on O'Toole when he was in Toronto recently shooting Global Heresy. See the excerpt here.
February 19, 2001: Hello there! Sorry for taking so long between updates, folks. It's been a busy time around my casa... I have a new website on the go - hame.ca! It's a site devoted to what interests me (other than O'Toole, of course)... It's a little bit of everything. I encourage you to go and check it out! Hold on to your seats - I've got a large pic update (>40 pics!) coming this weekend. Stay tuned! Also, coming in April - the Unofficial Peter O'Toole Pages will be three years old! And to recognize that, I'm going to revamp the site - make it a bit cleaner, more organized. In three years, a lot of crap piles up in stacks all over the place!
December 20, 2000: Peter O'Toole was on 60 Minutes II and The Charlie Rose show last night - thank you to those of you who let me know on short notice! I taped both shows. The 60 Minutes II segment was actually about 10 minutes of the full-hour Charlie Rose interview encapsulated. A very good interview! It borrowed bits from the previous Charlie Rose interview with O'Toole (done a number of years back) as well as the A&E Biography show. Near the end of the interview they showed a scene from "The Final Curtain" - which we now know is about an aging gameshow host, played by O'Toole, who vents his frustration with the current state of gameshow affairs in the U.K. by killing a young host who aggravates him. From that scene it looks like O'Toole is really getting into playing well- (or you might say poorly) aged men who rail on the present and weep for the future... Also, a further note to some of you who emailed me: I'm more or less sure Peter isn't dead - some people thought that because both shows did segments on him (one even mentioned CNN? - they were a little potty, though) that O'Toole had passed on. As far as I know, he was alive three weeks ago in Toronto shooting a movie, and the interview was taped a while before that! The Charlie Rose interview was taped before the U.S. election and was pre-empted from its original airing date. Addendum: A link to CBS's 60 Minutes II page on the O'Toole interview with Charlie Rose, here.
November 23, 2000: Pictures Update! I've added new pictures to the following categories: O'Toole Pics (new page 4!), Lawrence of Arabia, What's New Pussycat, Becket, Books, Theatre, Murphy's War, Miscellaneous, The Last Emporer and Goodbye, Mr. Chips.

Also, there was a feature interview by Sarah Hampton with O'Toole in today's Globe and Mail! It's available at the Globe and Mail's website, and here. Enjoy!

November 13, 2000: Update: O'Toole is in Toronto shooting a film with Alicia Silverstone and Joan Plowright!

"In "Global Heresy" Alicia Silverstone plays the bass player in a US rock band called Global Heresy who rent a country house from two bankrupt English aristocrats played by Peter O'Toole and Joan Plowright. The movie is directed by Sidney J.Furie. The November 3rd.issue of Screen International ( No.1283 ) lists the main cast and crew. The November 10th.issue ( No.1284 ) has the news story I wrote about before. To get back issues of Screen International you can e-mail SCI@subscription.co.uk ". - this from http://www.starletnews.com/alicia.html. Further digging produced this at screendaily.com:

:"WMA's Steve Kenis unveils own UK talent agency
- Adam Minns in London-September 18, 2000
Steve Kenis, former managing director at William Morris Agency (WMA) in London, has launched UK-based talent agency Steve Kenis & Co to represent clients including Peter O’Toole, Richard Harris, Bruce Beresford and Rowan Atkinson."
- you can read the rest of the article here.

November 11, 2000:
Just a few notes on some recent additions to the website:
Some people might not know tha the Filmographical section also includes a theatrical section, - perhaps I should change the name to "actor's c.v."...
The links page has been updated to include a number of links to recently created fan pages for O'Toole - there is also a link to the Peter O'Toole mailing list/E-Group.
I found a couple of links to information about 'The Final Curtain", Peter's current movie project - the Internet Movie Database has one of them: here and this is from upcomingmovies.com.

One final note: I was _this_ close to meeting O'Toole! Well, not really. A friend of mine was at the Toronto Raptors' basketball game against Cleveland last night (we won! Yeah!) and who should be announced on the big board as attending the game: O'Toole! He's here in Toronto! I have no idea what he's in town for - I've called around and checked the listings and he's not slated to be a guest anywhere... Wonder what's up! Anyone with information please let e (us!) know... Cheers!

November 5, 2000:
Hello all! Just a few notes as a quick update to let you know about a few changes around here... Also, in the next few days I'll be adding between 30 and 40 new pictures! Just getting them organized and they'll be ready to go.

First thing is that, much to my own displeasure and that of some of the users, I have had to make the guestbook 'moderated' - which means that all entries to the guestbook now have to go through me before they're posted to public viewing. This is necessary because in the last few weeks we've had a number of inappropriate messages posted, and moderating the guestbook is the only way to guard against that continuing. What this means in a practical sense is that when you make an entry to the guestbook, it might be a day or so before it gets posted. Sorry for the inconvenience but I had no choice.

Second thing is that the new domain name for this site is "http://realitymouse.com/otoole" - this is already in effect and has been for some time - however, the old domain name, hame.toronto.on.ca, is about to expire - I am converting it to hame.ca very soon. In the meantime, realitymouse.com works just fine!

I've noticed that activity on the site has increased dramatically in the last few months - welcome to our new users! Please feel free to contribute information or pictures or articles you may have relating to O'Toole - if you've met him, tell me about it and I'll add it to the anecdotal section. Got a link to an article about O'Toole you saw online? Let me know! This site is terrific because of the contributions I get from people like you - I do a bit of research and surfing to contribute myself, but I can't do it all! Thanks again to the people who have contributed in the past and also to those who continue to send me snippits or links or pictures every now and then - it's like having correspondent reporters in the field. We've all got one thing in common - we think Peter O'Toole's an amazing actor, an amazing person. It shows in the fact we've had more than 25,000 hits to this site since it began over two years ago. Cheers!

September 26, 2000:

Very soon, our web address will be changing permanently to another domain name... keep an eye for updates!

Two notes of interest: Peter O'Toole is slated to appear on the Charlie Rose show very soon, possibly this week! - I notice that Charlie Rose is "in London" this week, and the rest of the shows for this week are all listed "TBA" on the pbs website. Keep an eye out, people! Also:

For those of you in the UK or Europe, or with pockets deep enough to afford the postage, on October 2nd, VCI, part of Kingfisher PLC, is releasing Jeffrey Bernard is Unwell on video and DVD! Here's the cover. The prices are 12.99 for a VHS tape, 19.99 for DVD, which also features a director's commentary. Prices are in British Pounds.

September 17, 2000:
I was informed recently that there are three possible routes to correspond with Peter O'Toole these days - his agent's address has changed from what was originally posted in the Biographical section - these are the three addresses:

c/o William Morris Agency, 31-32 Soho Square, London W1V 5DG England
c/o Veerline Ltd., 8 Baker St. GB-London, WAA 1DA England
c/o 54 Baker St. London W1M 1DJ England

Many people write to me asking for the best way to contact O'Toole - as I have not made contact with him myself I can't be sure but this is a step in the right direction! Please report back if you have success with any of these addresses. Cheers!

September 11, 2000:
Pictures update! I've added new pics to the following sections: Mr. Chips (8 new), Becket (5 new), Lord Jim (4 new), O'Toole Pics pg. 3 (7 new). More to come soon! I've got another 20 pics to add to the Lawrence section - just didn't have time today. Also...

I got MARRIED on August 26th! Mr. & Mrs. Hamish and Christine Grant! Phew. We took a week's honeymoon in Dillsboro N.C., quietly hiding away in a secluded mountain cabin... well, not that quietly. Anyway it was terrific! I'll post a picture when they're developed and digitized.

August 2, 2000:
Today is Peter O'Toole's birthday! O'Toole was born August 2nd, 1932. Happy 68th, Peter! And many more, we hope. See the guestbook for good wishes from our users! Big picture update coming soon folks... Stay tuned!
June 15th, 2000:
David Jameson has kindly provided us with (and presumably typed in himself!) the 1982 Playboy interview with O'Toole, entitled "The Double Life of Peter O'Toole" - see it on the Biographical page or go directly here. Thank you David!
June 12th, 2000:
Episode Three of John Howard's O'Toole stories has been added! Go here to view it.
June 5th, 2000:
My Birthday! A Special Treat! John Howard, a friend of O'Toole's during their British Navy service together during the fifties, has kindly provided me with a number of O'Toole stories from that time. There's a link to them in the Chronical section but you can go directly to the page here. I will update the page as new stories come in - they're quite amusing! Hopefully there will be some pictures to go with the stories - not necessarily connected with them but they are from that period of O'Toole's life. I've included John's email address (click on his name on the page) if people want to correspond with him. John and his cohorts, the Remnants of Nan 12, including "EGG", who is mentioned in Loitering with Intent, wish Peter well and hope that he will contact them so they can share their stories with him in person.

I have also included on the Chronical page two other items I've neglected to add in recent weeks (sorry!) one from Marie Shively, who is a huge Sting fan and relates a quote from Sting about O'Toole while he was performing Macbeth in 1979, and another from Dan Wood of Milwaukee, who met O'Toole at a book signing in Toronto some years ago.

June 4th, 2000:
Tomorrow is my birthday! 29 years old. Crazy. My poker buddies tell me that 29 is my double-down year. 2+9=11 - always double down on 11 in blackjack, right? Har har... Anyway. Lots of pictures added! Fifty-Nine, to be exact! And I've got another 40 or so to look at to add later on when I get time to process them. Pictures have been added to the following sections: Becket, Goodbye Mr. Chips, My Favorite Year, The Generals, The Man of Lamancha, Lord Jim, Lawrence of Arabia, The Lion in Winter, How to Steal a Million, Theatre, Books, Movies (Misc.),What's New Pussycat, Pictures of O'Toole Pt.3. - Also, I've added a new section of pictures from Murphy's War- there are too many for it to remain in the Miscellaneous area.

Other important news: Peter is working on a new film directed by Patrick Harkins (dir. Nightlife, 1996 - TV), written by John Hodge, who previously worked on Trainspotting and Shallow Grave - It's to be called "The Final Curtain", slated for release in 2001. Plot Outline: A rivalry develops between a showbiz veteran and an upstart newcomer. I'm betting the showbiz veteran is O'Toole.

Coming soon: more pictures, and some really special additions I've received recently. More on that later! Cheers, everyone!

April 30th, 2000:

OK, OK, I missed the site's second birthday. My GOD I have to find more time to work on this site. Anyway!

THE UNOFFICIAL PETER O'TOOLE PAGES
IS TWO YEARS OLD AS OF MARCH 24TH, 2000!

Yay! 19,000 hits later and we're still going strong.

Pictures Update! Ok so I've updated the photographic section to include revamped sections for The Theatre, The Lion in Winter, Lord Jim, The Manor. How to Steal a Million, Miscellaneous, Phantoms, The Ruling Class and What's New Pussy Cat.

Meryl Streep Online - Activist mentions that Peter O'Toole has participated in The Barretstown Gang Camp (Ireland)
In 1988, Paul Newman founded the Hole in the Wall Gang in Connecticut, which every year serves 800 seriously ill children. The camp has been both widely acclaimed and oversubscribed, prompting Newman and others to launch the new programme in Europe. Therapeutic drama is featured in their Creative Expression programme, challenging the children to move beyond their perceived limits and find creative new ways of self-expression. In the Centre they become involved in acting, clowning, puppeteering, singing, dancing, and video, as well as make-up and costume or set design. Each group produces a show here on their final night, and special friends, like actors Meryl Streep, Peter O'Toole and Kenneth Branagh have performed with the children at the annual Benefit Gala- Barretstown's Fantasia. For more information about their programs and to see how you can help, visit their website!

March 19th, 2000:
Peter O'Toole to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame! I was poking around updating the filmography section, and discovered that the Internet Movie Database lists Peter O'Toole as one of the actors slated to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2000! Well, it's not a knighthood but it's close enough for the time being. Check the IMDB site here, and the Walk of Fame site here for more information as it develops - they don't list a date for his induction yet but I'll keep an eye on it and let you know!

March 15th-19th, 2000:
HUGE UPDATE IN PROGRESS!!! Ok, so I'm getting down to it and updating the site 'for the new millennium'... haw. Right. Anyway, I'm revamping most of the site bit by bit. I've updated the photographical section to be a little more compartmentalized, and the interface is, I think, more attractive and easy to use. Check it out. At the moment, only Becket, Jeffrey Bernard and O'Toole Pics 1,2,3 are working. I hope to complete the rest of the sections in the next day or so. There are 92 pictures in the O'Toole sections alone! Reindexing the catalog is a labour-intensive exercise but it's paying off.
(March 16th - added Books & Magazines, Posters and Video Covers...)
(March 18th - added Goodbye Mr. Chips, Fairytale: A True Story, My Favourite Year, Night of the Generals)
(March 19th - added Drawings by Fans, Lawrence of Arabia, The Man of La Mancha

The Internet Movie Database (link) lists "The Sinister Saga of Making 'The Stunt Man' as Peter O'Toole's latest credit for 2000. It's a documentary, obviously, on the production of the film. Details are scant at the moment. I did some searching around and found a webpage, www.thestuntman.com, that has a listing for the Egyptian Theatre, showing the 20th Anniversary screening of The Stunt Man, as well as a review of the documentary: check it here. In response to a reminder from one of our users, I've updated the web technical page to remove or replace the links that are now (sadly) dead. The Washington Post has changed its article archive system and now requires a $2.95 (USD) fee for looking up articles in their archive section - therefore the links to reviews and articles on him beyond 14 days old are bust. Shoot. Many of the newspaper links are dead as they've expired - how things change in a year or two!

March 3rd, 2000:
I'm experimenting with a new format for the site. New updates will appear in this format - do you like it? Let me know! I've cleaned up the welcome page, changed a few of the graphics around and about and I've upgraded the menu bar above to make make it more progressive. This site's 2nd anniversary is coming up on April 1st, so I thought I'd revamp it a bit. The pictures I mentioned are half-done - online soon!

February 11, 2000:
WOW! Sorry for taking so long peoples. It's been two months since my last update here. Life has gotten busy for me! I am engaged to be married! I proposed to Christine on New Year's at 1 a.m., and she said yes! The marriage will be in August. Add to that Christmas, as well as my working on two other websites at the moment (primarily setting them up) and it doesn't leave a lot of time for this place. However, I'm making a point of focussing on this site over the next week. My "to add to O'Toole" folder has about 30 items in it (mostly pictures - some links, not much new info), all of which I will process and put online shortly after this weekend. Look for it!

December 11, 1999
More Pictures, and... at long last, I did some scanning and a number of O'Toole pictures, articles and interviews sent to me by one of our more dedicated viewers are finally available! Check the biographical page for The 1965 Playboy Interview with O'Toole - it's seven large-size jpegs (each 200k or more - had to keep the resolution high to keep the type visible), as well as an A&E Biography Magazine profile of O'Toole, and an article from People Magazine on Kate O'Toole, his daughter-actress. Many pictures have been added to numerous areas of the photographical section... O'Toole, Becket, Lawrence of Arabia, How to Steal a Million, Miscellaneous, etc... Too many to list! Take a look. I think what with the sheer volume of pictures I'm going to have to revamp the photographical section again. We have over 300 images related to O'Toole online here, now! Enjoy!

I haven't done this in a while so I'll say hello to everyone from the following countries who have stopped by: United Kingdom, Austria, Germany, Canada, United States, Australia, Japan, Ireland, Sweden, Italy, France, Romania, Spain, Mexico, Yugoslavia, Argentina, Korea (South), Poland, Russian Federation, Greece, Denmark, Brazil, Israel, Norway, Singapore, Finland, Netherlands, Switzerland, South Africa, Chile, Malaysia, Belgium, New Zealand (Aotearoa), Latvia, Croatia (Hrvatska), Hungary, Portugal, United Arab Emirates, Guatemala, Luxembourg, Taiwan, India, Slovenia, Czech Republic, Iceland, Saudi Arabia, Cyprus, Slovak Republic, Estonia, Brunei Darussalam, USSR (former), Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Lithuania, Turkey, Ecuador, Malta, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Burkina Faso, Uruguay, Jordan, Great Britain, Colombia, Costa Rica, Kuwait, Hong Kong, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Thailand, Egypt, Indonesia, Monaco, Madagascar, Ukraine, and Macedonia!

November 18, 1999:
Details and Links!
Hey there... Lots of activity in the Guestbook lately! First we get hundreds of Austrian high school students descending on us asking for the meaning of "O.T.O.T." as O'Toole's credit in William Wyler's How To Steal a Million, then we swing back into the debate about O'Toole's answering machine message (which is still available for listening in the Update Archives - just scroll down and it's there) ... well, if Andrea from Skip Moviemagazine is watching, we're still waiting for the answer! I'm betting at least two of the Initials stand for O'Toole. :-) Anyway. Finally, an answer about the cryptic answering message! Bob Shortock tells us that it was indeed a prank - well, at least it was a good impression! Sigh. One of these days I'll meet him...

In response to Paul Jones' query about a new O'Toole image at the Thespianet site - don't worry, I scooped it, as well as a few others, which will be added to the site very soon. Thanks for letting me know! That's the primary way I find out about new O'Toole stuff outside of my own surfing.. Keep it up! Always looking for more material. Here are some new links I've found: (they will be added to the links page after the next update):

August 14, 1999 - Special Update! Jeffrey Bernard is Unwell I have created a special page devoted to Jeffrey Bernard is Unwell, Peter's current theatrical foray - the first in quite some time! There you will find reviews of the play (it's a success!) and pictures culled from articles, etc. Thanks to the participants in the Guestbook area for providing links to reviews that gave me the idea of making the material more easily available. In future, when Peter has a new project running or in the works, I will create a special section to focus on it.

Also, I have added a number of pictures to the following sections: Pictures of O'Toole (3), Lawrence of Arabia Posters (2), Goodbye Mr.Chips (1), Miscellaneous (6).

August 4, 1999 - Peter's 67th Birthday was August 2nd! And I wasn't here to post an update! Sheesh, what kind of silly webmaster am I, lolling about on the beach at my cottage over the long weekend (Monday was a civic holiday in Ontario, Canada, where this website resides) when I should be maintaining the site. In any case, it seems lots of people got into the spirit of things and posted birthday greetings to Peter in the guestbook - all was not lost!

We welcome visitors from the following countries, who bring our total to 66(!) world communities who have dropped by: Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Guatemala, Cyprus, former USSR, Hungary, Denmark, Slovenia, Ukraine, Chile, Estonia, Croatia, Papua New Guinea, Monaco, Iceland, Lithuania, Latvia, Pakistan, Macedonia, Slovak Republic, Indonesia, Brunei Darussalam, and Portugal! Welcome all!

July 25, 1999 Well, it wasn't quite a week.
But! We have lots of new pictures for you to examine... 6 new pics of O'Toole, 1 New Becket pic, 2 new Goodbye Mr.Chips pics, 4 new Lawrence of Arabia posters, 1 new The Ruling Class poster, and 7 additions to the miscellaneous section, featuring pictures from Lord Jim, Creator, Brotherly Love and My Favourite Year. Check them out in the photographical section.

One of the 'Pages many supporters has told me recently that Peter is currently in rehearsal in London for a reprise of "Jeffrey Bernard is Unwell", slated to debut in the West End sometime in August. If anyone has any further details to provide on this it'd be appreciated!

ALSO! Peter's Birthday is August 2nd - next week! I hope to have some kind of special graphic online to reflect that fact on the day... Look for it!

June 18, 1999 - Hey all... Sorry for taking so long between updates. Just in case you thought i'd dropped off the face of the planet, I thought I'd make a small addition here to mention that I will be making a moderate-sized update with new pictures and some new info on O'Toole within the next week or so. Busy busy busy! My birthday was on the 5th, and I threw a rather large (over 100 people!) party (pictures of which are available at this URL...) from which I am still recovered, AND I have a new girlfriend (hey Chris!) AND I've been doing a bunch of photography gigs over the past week (did I mention that aside from being a graphic designer by job I am also a freelance photographer? No? Now you know!) ... so I really haven't had a stich of time to update the site.. However, I see that activity is still increasing, and lots of people have been leaving nice entries in the guestbook... Drop in and leave a message some time if you haven't already..! Cheers everyone and look for the new update soon!

May 13, 1999 - Hello! Welcome to the new space... the old one is going to be out of date for a little while until I settle an issue or two with my old internet provider (about a week or so I should think....) and then there will be a forwarding link to bring people here automatically.

A few new pictures added - from Goodbye Mr.Chips, Lawrence, Lord Jim, The Lion in Winter, How to Steal A Million and Becket... Also a couple of pictures added to the Pictures of O'Toole section. Enjoy!

May 2, 1999 - WE HAVE A NEW URL! Ok... So my domain name has been registered! The URL for this page is now:

Please change your links accordingly. In a short while I will change the old location's site to include a forwarding marker to point people to the new location. I have also sent a number of emails to Yahoo! and the other larger search engines to make sure they know of the change as well. Over the next little while I'll be making cosmetic changes to the site to reflect the new URL. My email address is different, too. - acheron@hame.toronto.on.ca. Please use this one in future when corresponding with me! Thanks.

April 28, 1999 - Small Update: Peter's involvement in the upcoming CBS miniseries, Joan of Arc, with him playing the role of Bishop Cauchon, has been highlighted on the CBS Joan of Arc website, here. There's a nice recent pic of him there, which I will add to the photographical section in the next update. Watch for Joan of Arc, May 16th! Thank you, Jeff Swindoll, for this info!

April 27, 1999 - More Pictures added... New Pictures of Peter have been added to the How to Steal a Million, Beckett, Lawrence of Arabia (stills), Goodbye Mr. Chips, Pictures of O'Toole and Miscellaneous sections. Thanks to the users of EBay once again for their contributions. As well: Dee C. has contributed a huge pile of articles and clippings - I just received the package last week... Now I've got a bit of work ahead of me typing the best of them in... Thank you thank you thank you! Activity on the site seems to be increasing - which is quite good. I noticed that the Britannica site has us listed as being "notable" (one star)... Not bad... let's see if we can go for more! I have plans to add more structure to the collection of articles and interviews we have here - there are so many now it begs for some kind of indexing. So, over the next few months I'm going to be adding categories, etc - making cosmetic and/or significant structural changes to the site to accomodate a more fluid and sensible way to house all this information.

Statistics tell us we have vistors from The Seychelles, Singapore, Poland, Thailand and Bulgaria joining us! Welcome!

April 6, 1999 - BIG NEWS! (and more pictures!) - In the VERY near future this site will be moving to a new home on the web! Courtesy of the Canadian Government, I have registered a new domain name - hame.toronto.on.ca - I'll make the announcement soon as to when the site will make the transition to the new digs. At that point, the website's address will be http://hame.toronto.on.ca/otoole. I will be putting an automatic-forward at this address to make sure that people using the old address find the new one. As well, the Search Engines will be notified, etc... Stay Tuned!!!

New pictures have been added to the miscellaneous, How to Steal a Million, Lawrence of Arabia and Pictures of O'Toole sections... Thank you Ebay for quite a few of them, and miscellaneous surfin' the web produced the others... Finally saw Murphy's War recently. Quite good! I loved the scenes of Murphy learning to fly the reconnaisance plane...

Statistics tell us we have visitors from Colombia, Austria, Ireland, Mexico, Belgium, Panama, Luxemburg, South Africa, Estonia and Yugoslavia joining us! Welcome, international travellers!

AS OF MARCH 24, 1999 THE UNOFFICIAL PETER O'TOOLE PAGES IS ONE YEAR OLD!

Well, I put the site online for the first time on March 24, 1998 - but I didn't actually put any ads out for it until the 1st of April - a week later. The first week was testing, primarily. But my goodness! A year! Whoo-hoo! Look at how far we've come, people! Hundreds of images available, tons of articles, and most of this is thanks to your help and contributions! Couldn't have made it this far without you! Thanks again to everyone who's ever sent me email or provided pictures or articles.. Lots more to come in year number two! Yay! Happy birthday to us... Happy birthday to us... :-)

March 24, 1999 - LOTS OF PICTURES! Once again, the Internet (particularly Ebay) have been quite fruitful for providing new images of O'Toole and his various films... New additions include a number of press pictures of O'Toole coming through customs at LAX, a press pic of the first day of shooting of Goodbye, Mr. Chips, as well as some lobby cards from Lawrence of Arabia and Beckett, etc etc... Have a look! I've added a few new links to the web technical page, to reviews of Lawrence of Arabia (Roger Ebert's review in the Chicago Sun Times), the Last Emporer (from Images Journal), Fairytale (in the Houston Press) and a quip from Patrick Stewart (Capt. Picard on Star Trek:The Next Generation)... A new anecdote from John M. of Hermosa Beach, California, of his meeting O'Toole while working as a hotel employee, and that's about it for now! Oh, one more thing: I have a comprehensive stats program attached to the front page of the site now so I can find out more about the usage of the site as well as where you all are coming from, and what sites link to here... Turns out a few more than I thought! Welcome(!) to our users from the following countries: United States, Canada, India, UK, Germany, Romania, Russian Federation, Sweden, Korea (South), Norway, Niger, Moldova, Greece, Spain, Finland, Argentina, Australia, Japan, Arab Emirates, France, Switzerland, Israel, Italy, Netherlands, and New Zealand!

March 14, 1999 - MAJOR UPDATE! I seem to have some time on my hands this weekend so I have made a lot of changes and additions - I updated the button bar above so that it's a little cleaner, and fits better on smaller monitors - also notice the neat colour change that occurs when you move your mouse over the buttons... I have revamped the photographical pages so it's not one BIG page that loads with all the previews in it - I think you'll like how it's laid out - let me know! Many new images added - some I culled from the Internet Movie Database, others were sent in (thank you M.Megan Lee!), and still others I found on Ebay.com's listings for Peter O'Toole items on auction. I have updated the filmography page to include the following movies/series: Father Damien, Civvies, Isabelle Eberhardt, Pygmalion. As well, I updated his awards listings to include his nominations and awards for the British Academy Awards, the National Board of Review USA, and the National Society of Film Critics awards. I have updated the Web Technical page to include new technical details on the hardware I use to put this page together (got a new computer recently!)... I have added a few new notes to the biographical section, about his having sued for custody of his son Lorcan from Karen Brown in 1988, and a couple of other things... There is a nice anecote from Alonzo Forment in the chronical section about seeing O'Toole in performance...

March 8, 1999 - Some Interesting Stuff: There is an official webpage devoted to O'Toole's upcoming movie, The Manor here - there is a good deal of information on the upcoming film there, as well as a number of pictures of the cast and crew- I've added the ones of O'Toole to the Photographical page... If you want to go directly to the Trailer (10 megs! - Requires the Quicktime Plugin) then click here. Some other new pictures, including one below, taken in 1973 when O'Toole was visiting his mother in hospital - take a look! - others I've culled from miscellaneous surfing on the web, too.

February 27, 1999 - Lots of new images! 1 added to the Lawrence of Arabia pics, 12 added to the Movies-Miscellaneous pics... some were sent in by Megan, a fan from Korea, and others I found while searching Amazon.com and the Internet Movie Database. It would seem as though a good number of O'Toole's movies are being rereleased as 'classics' (no suprise there!) and they are being given new cover designs - take a look! A new movie!? The Internet Movie Database lists O'Toole as playing "Mr. Ravenscroft" in an upcoming movie, titled "The Manor", with Greta Scacchi (who starred with Tim Robbins in "The Player")... don't know who it's directed by but it's still in production. More info as I receive it - does anyone know anything about this? Let me know!

February 10, 1999 - Alison sends me a link, here, where an interview with O'Toole (circa the release of Phantoms) can be found. I'm going to have to start asking around to find out when the third volume of Loitering with Intent will be released. Anyone know someone in the publishing business?

February 9, 1999 - Mini-Update: It was brought to my attention that Peter O'Toole's agent has moved their office and correspondence can now be sent via: William Morris Agency, 1 Stratton Street, London, W1X 6HB. The Biographical page has been updated accordingly.

February 7, 1999 - Phew! Once again, sorry for not updating recently... Lots going on. A few things to mention: I have a number of little updates: eBay.com, the online auction site, is a good place to buy or sell items of all kinds, including memorabilia - I checked and there are currently seven items relating to O'Toole on offer - a number of his older movies on VHS, and a copy of the 1965 Playboy Issue which includes a full-length interview with him (coming soon to this site!) - It should be noted I found out about this through the fansites.com directory for O'Toole, which can be found here. Another good place on the web to go searching for just about anything is Ask Jeeves.. Check it out and you'll see what I mean! John M. sent me a nice anecdote about O'Toole which has been added to the Chronical section.

More to come very soon! Keep posting those messages to the Guestbook!

December 5, 1998 - Updates! Hi there... Sorry for taking so long to update things! Having some trouble with my computer again. Anyway, nothing serious there but in any case, lots of new stuff to tell you about!

Our long-time contributor Ms. Santorelli has provided a series of stills from "Goodbye Mr.Chips" - now added to the Photographical page.

I beamed into the David Lean Website and found a few listings for articles relating to O'Toole - they are listed in the 'looking for' section at the bottom of the Biographical page - the Lean site doesn't actually include the article, just references... If anyone has access to them, please send them in! Also, I am told by one of our contributors that Kate O'Toole is listed in the cast credits of "Dancing at Lughnasa" - she plays a pharmacist. I haven't got too many details on this film but if anyone has further information, I'd love to hear about it! I've added another review of Loitering with Intent to the Biographical page, and a new listing in the Filmography - 'The Antagonist', a 1981 film about the Roman occupation of Palestine that O'Toole starred in with Anthony Quayle, directed by Boris Sagal. Another interesting note is that the soundtrack to "What's New Pussycat?" has been rereleased (no doubt to cash in on the Tom Jones/Lounge music connection - it's so trendy these days) - look for it at cdnow. I found a good image of the cover (added to the Photographical page), and posted below... Also, a picture of the videotape cover of "How to Steal a Million" (small!) has been added. Ms.Santorelli also posted a neato "Wanted" poster in the Guestbook area, so I've added it to our listings on the main site.

November 7, 1998 - Small update again - "Gail" wrote to tell me today that Peter appeared on an episode of Rosie O'Donnell's show some time before Phantoms was released to theatres... If anyone saw it or has a transcript of the interview, please send it in! Not that Rosie's a particularly good interviewer, but it'd be amusing nonetheless to see how O'Toole handled her bubbly personality. Also I corrected the link below to the Gay Talese article...

November 1, 1998 - A small further update - I found a couple of nice movie poster images (for What's New Pussycat? and Lawrence of Arabia) at a Swedish movie poster archive (here), now added to the Photographical section. As well, I spotted a retro review of My Favourite Year in rec.movies... That's now added to the Web Technical section but you can read it by clicking here. Also, note above that I have archived the comments from our Guestbook (just in case the people at Guestworld decide to clean house!) and will add to it on a monthly basis. I'm one of those people who never throws anything away!

October 31,1998 - Hallowe'en! So how many of you are dressing up as Lawrence of Arabia tonight? Har... Anyway, part one of the significant update I've been jawing about is here! I've redone the Photographical section in a more efficient mode... There is now one single photo page to go to, and it contains smaller previews of all of the images available. Apologies to all for the time it might take to load all the images, but they're a heck of a lot smaller than what was there before, so it should in fact load a bit quicker than some of the larger photo pages I had before. As you might expect, clicking on the previews will lead you to a larger image in a new window.

Some new additions to note: in the Biographical section, we have an article on Peter written by Gay Talese, from his book "Fame and Obscurity", kindly provided by RA4538 (sorry I'm not sure whose email address that is!).

Graham Hawkins wrote to inform me about his O'Toole-related site(s): one having to do with Lawrence of Arabia, and another having to do with How to Steal a Million.

'Edna' wrote to inform me that there is a site with information on the movie Father Damien at this address. - Peter has a part in this upcoming film, (in post-production slated for release early next year) directed by Paul Cox and starring Sam Neill, Derek Jacobi and Kris Kristofferson(sp). The site is actually devoted to Sam Neill, and there's not much on O'Toole's part in the movie to be found, but hopefully that will change as the movie's release draws nearer.

This quote was forwarded to me by a friend of mine, Jason, who discovered it in a magazine somewhere...

October 2, 1998 - Whoo! Sorry for taking so long on the update, folks! I've received a couple of emails lately that woke me out of my remissence... I've been terribly busy lately with social commitments and a new job. However, now that the weather is settling into coldness, I have more time to spend indoors attending to more localized concerns. I am in the midst of working on a revamp for the site, at least part of which I hope to have online by this Sunday, October 4. I had a bad system crash on my hard drive last week, and I have lost a number of submissions to the site that I would have added already were it not for their loss. I have one juicy addition to make soon, as quickly as I can get it typed in - I found that issue of Playboy Magazine from September, 1965, featuring a very long and detailed interview with O'Toole that will make a fine addition to what's here already. It's a terrific read. So! Look for something new on Sunday, and by the way, October 1st was the six-month anniversary (demi-anniversary?) of the site's inception. We've come quite a distance, haven't we! All thanks to the efforts of those who have contributed large and small to the site. Thank you for making it what it is!

August 24, 1998 - Hello again! Starting with this update, older 'updates' will be archived here (there will be a proper button for it coming soon, but more about that later!) for your perusal. All the links will still hopefully work despite their shift in location.

A trio of new images added to the new photographical #6, one is a picture of O'Toole and Petula Clark on the set of "Goodbye Mr.Chips", and the other two are production stills from "Phantoms". Someone emailed me recently and mentioned Peter is apparently working on a new film in Hawaii, about "Father Damien"? Sounds good to me. If anyone has any detail to add to this, I'd be quite appreciative!

Courtesy of one of O'Toole's youngest fans, Olivia DeGraff, we have some updates to the theatre credits that are currently listed (improperly!) on the filmographical page. I'll be making some category changes and additions soon that will clear that all up, but for the time being, that's where they are! Once again, any additions please let me know!

August 10, 1998 - I'll be posting an update soon - but I had to mention that we've been selected as a "Panacea Pick of the Week" by "Dr. Daniel's Movie Emergency", for the week starting August 10, 1998. (This week!) I'd never heard of the site before but it looks pretty cool. Please go check it out! If they're good enough to include the 'Pages as a weekly selection, they must be good people!

August 3, 1998 - Yesterday was Peter's BIRTHDAY! Happy 66th, Peter O'Toole! Unfortunately I wasn't able to put something special on the site as I couldn't get home to put what I'd planned online. Too many things tugging me from all sides. And yes, I got their phone numbers... :-) No, if only... Anyway. Well, I did rent a couple of his movies to try and make up for it. August also marks the fifth month of operation for the site... Thanks again, everyone, for helping to make this site what it is. And it can only get better!

July 30, 1998 - Hello again - some new additions to list: in the Biographical section, from Michael Smith, we have the interview of O'Toole that appeared in a 1982 issue of Rolling Stone Magazine, which includes lots of wonderful tidbits about the actor's past and (then) present... As well, a few neato notes to add to the masses of O'Toole info being curried together here: Gloria Stuart, the actress who played "Old Rose" in James Cameron's epic, "Titanic", recounted in an interview recently about what an experience it was to work with O'Toole in "My Favourite Year" - those of you who might not remember will perhaps be reminded that it was she who played the middle-aged woman who O'Toole's character, Alan Swann, sweeps off her feet at the Stork Club, establishing Swann's still-managed flair as a ladies' man. According to Stuart, O'Toole was wonderful, a gentleman, and he even took pains to practice the dancing with her before hand to make sure they had it right.

Another noteable quoteable comes from Rose McGowan, of "The Doom Generation" fame, who also has a role opposite O'Toole in Phantoms: "I'd walk on broken glass for him. I love him. If he were younger and I were older..." (Neon Magazine, July 1998 p.9).

For those of you who're interested in doing a little detective work, here's a .wav file of the phone message left cryptically on my service last week : is it O'Toole? Or if not, who then? Here it is. (280k)

July 23, 1998 - Hey there... I'm applying a slightly different format to this part of the pages - the previous two 'updates' to the page will remain listed below the current one. I've changed the visual styling of the button/section descriptions below as well. On to the updates: We have a couple of new images kindly provided by Jena Santorelli, on Photographical Page Five, as well as some new links to O'Toole-related information on the web... PHANTOMS is out on video now, and I noticed that Kate O'Toole, one of Peter's children, is working on a new film directed by and starring Anjelica Huston. The presently bedridden O'Toole afficionado, Craig Furnas, 'furnas'ed me with some details on O'Toole's involvement with Sting, which has been added to the reference on the Biographical page.

I received a message on my answering service the other day from someone with an English accent - they didn't leave a name, but, whoever you are, please email me!

July 20, 1998
- Hello all... Sorry for the length of time between updates - but it's been worth it! Lots of new submissions to list... We have a fifth page of images, largely due to the contributions of "Dana", a graphic artist who has thoughtfully provided a number of sketches of O'Toole that she did herself out of divine inspiration, as well as a few new images from his films... Take a look!

As well, we have a couple of additions to the biographical section, and I have added a list of articles provided by the author of those anecdotes, Craig Furnas (of California!) which I don't have in my possession but I'm looking for currently. If anyone has a lead on these articles, or has them and would be willing to transcribe them and send them in, I'd be quite thankful!

One final note: Peter's birthday is fast approaching (August 2!)... I hope to have put together some kind of special commemorative splash page for the site to mark the event. Look for it on his birthday! - H.
